COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2007, touted as the world's second largest exhibition devoted to information technology, will kick off today at the Taipei World Trade Center with organizers estimating that the five-day event will draw over 130,000 visitors.

Organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council said that to position Computex Taipei as a B-2-B (business-to-business) procurement platform, the exhibition will only be allowed to buyers except for the last day, when the public will be allowed.

TAITRA Executive Vice President Walter Yeh said that while COMPUTEX TAIPEI may not be the world's largest IT exhibition in terms of size, it is the world's largest ICT procurement platform. "We hope to shape COMPUTEX TAIPEI as a procurement exhibition rather than an exhibition for consumers," said Yeh.

A record 1,333 local and overseas exhibitors using a record 2,926 booths will grace the floors of Halls 1, 2, and 3 of the Taipei World Trade Center as well as the Taipei International Convention Center. TAITRA is expecting an increase in the number of foreign buyers to attend the exhibition and said that some 32,000 overseas buyers have already registered for the event. The exhibition will be divided into the theme areas of Computer Systems, Components, Parts, Accessories, Communication, Motherboards & Add-on Cards, Peripherals, Storage Equipment, Optoelectronic Display Products, Digital Audio/Video Devices, Software, Security, IC Application, IP Telecom, Car Electronics Devices, and embedded Products.

The Computer Systems, Motherboards, and Add-on Cards area in Hall 2 will feature suppliers such as Acer, Hon Hai Precision, Inventec Corp., and Asustek Computer Inc. The Optoelectronics Display, Digital Audio-Video, and Software area in Hall 3 will house firms such as Chi Lin Technology, Ultima Electronics, Teco, and Microsoft Taiwan. International companies such as Intel, AMD, Albatron, TI, Tatung, and Mitac can be found in Hall 4.

Other notable exhibitors include Foxconn, Gigabyte, Philips, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Sanyo Denki. This year's event features companies from countries such as the U.S., Japan, South Korea, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, Australia, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates.

Yeh said that while the Internet has served as a platform where computer buyers can obtain information on suppliers, COMPUTEX TAIPEI offers a face-to-face meeting opportunity which is essential for business. Yeh said that he expects to see an increasing number of exhibitors and visitors to COMPUTEX TAIPEI next year with the opening of the new Taipei World Trade Center in Nankang, Taipei.
