Missiles miss target in drill simulating attack by China Some three to four missiles missed their targets during the Han Kuang exercise yesterday at Ilan County in which the air force and the navy were mobilized to simulate the military's reaction to an air and sea invasion from mainland China. The missiles included the Hawk air-defense missile and and the Chaparral Air-defense missile which were launched off the shore in Ilan County at unmanned target planes. Ministry of National Defense Minister Lee Jye, who was on hand to watch the exercise, would not comment on the missile misses. Warships were mobilized yesterday off the coast of Ilan County which also launched missiles in the exercise to intercept a sea and air invasion on Taiwan. Twelve air force fighter jets that included F-16's and Taiwan made-IDF's, or Indigenous Defense Fighters, also participated in the exercise yesterday. One of the missiles that missed their targets yesterday caused a scare when a Hawk missile landed in a cemetery near the coast. An ammunition handling squad was sent in to the scene to carry the live missile out of the cemetery and dispose of it in the ocean, where it was detonated. A Chaparal Air-defense missile that also went astray found the ocean, while another missile is unaccounted for. During the exercise, a warship fired torpedoes which successfully found the target boat, while another warship together with an F-16 fighter jet launched harpoon missiles which also successfully hit the target boat. The exercise was opened to the public as the MND set up viewing platforms for people near the exercise site. The annual Han Kuang exercise, the largest ever this year, is taking place at locations across Taiwan and the outer islands. Today, an anti-airborne drill and an equipment and gear exhibition will be open to visitors in Hsinchu County. Also today, a military base defense drill will be held in Hualien County, while a drill countering a beach assault and an anti-airborne operation will take place in Pingtung County tomorrow. |
