The head of Hon Hai Precision Industry, the world's largest electronics manufacturing service provider, said yesterday his company and affiliate firms will see combined sales breaking the NT$2 trillion mark by the end of the year, a goal originally set for 2008.

Terry Gou, chairman of Hon Hai, made the remark at the company's "wei ya," or year-end party, that he spent NT$700 million on -- the most expensive one ever in Taiwan. Supermodel Chiling Lin was the master of ceremonies for the party.

During his speech at the party, Gou said Hon Hai will continue to grow at a steady pace in the future.

He said three years ago, he announced at the company's shareholders meeting the Hon Hai group's sales would break NT$1 trillion by 2008. Last year he forecasted the group would see sales breaking NT$2 trillion by 2008. Now, he said the NT$2 trillion mark would be reached by the end of this year.

He also mentioned next year, he will focus more on behind-the-scene works to allow employees aged between 35 and 45 to gain more experience, as he promised earlier.

As for the fact Hon Hai was voted by many as a "happy" place to work, Gou said there are three components to ensuring a happy working environment -- safety, stability and growth. "We will continue to work towards these goals," Gou said.

He also gave out spring couplets that he wrote for employees. Spring couplets are major Lunar New Year household decorative items.

For middle managers, he gave out couplets saying "Good men are those who seek more power; heroes are those who expand their territories."

For senior managers, he gave out couplets saying "General on the battlefield, prime minister in the government."

"These couplets are appropriate for people at different stages of their career paths," Gou said.

As for media attention that Gou received over the past couple of months, Gou joked by saying now that he has reached his sales goal, he has more free time.

In January, when Lien Sheng-wen, son of Kuomintang honorary chairman Lien Chan, got married, the widowed Gou was seen attending the wedding banquet with a date, Hong Kong actress Carina Lau who happens to be the girlfriend of award-winning Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung.

Mutual friends of Gou and Lau have told the media that they are just friends. Lau is currently spending time with Leung over the Lunar New Year break.

Last week, Gou, not known for a keen sense of fashion, was seen going to an Armani outlet to buy clothes.

Commenting on the recent media exposure he received, Gou joked by saying his senior executives should be go-getters like reporters.

But he also scoffed at the media by saying "none of you can throw an expensive party like this."
