My fellow citizens:		各位父老鄉親姊妹們：
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.		今天我站在這裡，謙卑地面對眼前的重責大任，感念各位托付於我的信任，遙想先賢先烈的犧牲奉獻，我銘記於心。感謝布希總統對國家的服務，也謝謝他在交接過程中始終如一的寬厚與配合。
Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.		至今已有四十四位美國人發表總統就職誓詞，這些誓詞發表於繁榮與和平時期，但也有些是在烏雲密佈、暴風肆虐之際發表。美國人之所以可以在困頓時刻繼續向前，不只是因為高位者的能力或願景，也是因為人民相信前人理念、忠於建國法。
So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.		我們是這樣走過來的，這一代的美國人也必須這樣走下去。
That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.		我們非常了解我國現在身處危機中心，對抗暴力與憎恨的戰爭尚未結束，某些人的貪婪與不負責任，導致經濟嚴重衰退，但這也是我們無法做出困難抉擇、讓國家準備好迎接新時代的後果。許多人失去家園、飯碗不保、公司關門；我們的健保費用太過昂貴、學校讓許多人失望；每天一再有證據顯示，我們使用能源的方式，使敵人壯大，讓地球受到威脅。
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.		這些是根據數據與統計得出的危機指標，而比較無法測量、卻同樣嚴重的危機，就是國家上下信心流失，害怕美國國力必將衰退、下一代眼界變低的憂慮揮之不去。
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.		今天我告訴各位，我們面對的是切切實實的挑戰，這些挑戰不只重大，而且將接踵而來。這些挑戰雖然無法在短時間內輕鬆解決，但美國人你們要知道，它們終將迎刃而解。
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.		今天我們齊聚於此，因為我們選擇希望而非恐懼，選擇有決心的團結，而非衝突或歧異。
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.		今天我們大聲宣告，那些無用的牢騷與虛偽的承諾已然告終，那些讓我們政壇窒息太久太久的交相指責與陳腐教條從此不再。
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.		我們還是年輕的國家，但引用聖經的話語來說，擺脫幼稚行為的時刻到來了，重申我們堅忍精神的時刻到來了，選擇更好的歷史，發揚寶貴天賦，發揚代代相傳的高貴理想。上帝應許我們，人人平等，人人自由，人人都該有機會追求完完整整的幸福。
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.		重申我國偉大的同時，我們了解到偉大絕非必然，偉大必須努力爭取。我們的旅程永遠不是抄捷徑、或是易於滿足而來；這條路從來就不是意志不堅、偏好享樂重於工作的人會選擇的旅程，也不是只求名利之樂之人會走的路；相反地，在這條漫長且充滿荊棘之路上帶領我們，一路邁向繁榮與自由的人，向來都是勇於冒險的行動派、真正成事之人，這之中有些人赫赫有名，但在工作崗位默默耕耘者更佔多數。
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.		為了我們，他們帶著簡單的家當漂流萬里，追尋新生活。
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.		為了我們，他們在剝削勞力的工廠裡苦幹實幹，定居西部，忍受鞭打，耕作於不毛之地。
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh.		為了我們，他們奮鬥不懈，葬身康科德（Concord）蓋茨堡（Gettsburg）、諾曼地（Normandy）、溪山（Khe Sahn）等等地方。
Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.		這些男男女女一再奮鬥犧牲，工作到雙手紅腫，為的是讓我們有機會過更好生活。他們認為美國的重要性，大於個人野心總和，也超越出身、財富或派系差異。
