CF finds pesticides in organic fruits

An investigation by Consumer’ Foundation (CF) found pesticides in fruits sold in a number of organic food stores in Taipei, CF said yesterday.

CF said that it found guavas and grapes from two organic food stores in Taipei to contain a small amount of pesticide in an investigation covering more than ten organic food stores.

A spokesman from the company selling the grapes said that the grapes were taken off the shelves two months before the investigation and that the pesticide on the grapes came from a neighboring orchard.

CF said the present organic food market is plagued by fruits that are claimed to be organic but actually contain pesticides, non-organic fruits that are organically-certified, and exorbitant prices set by retailers on organic products.

CF urges consumers to look for the CAS label and relevant certification when purchasing organic products.
