Taipei County Councilor Wu Shan-chiu of the opposition People First Party was shot this morning in h

is office in Hsintien City. He was pronounced dead at the Hsintien Tzu Chi Hospital shortly after 1 p.m.

Local TV stations said Wu received five shots, including the fatal shot that caused severe damage to his lungs and heart. He showed no sign of life when rushed to the hospital, Tzu Chi officials said.

Local TV reports said the gunman walked into Wu's office this morning and asked where he was. When he saw him, he fired the shots at him.

Premier Chang Chun-hsiung has asked relevant government authorities to find the perpetrator in the shortest possible time.

Wu, a three-time councilman of Taipei County, had been known for busting illegal sand and gravel businesses. Police are looking into whether the shooting had to do with sand and gravel operators seeking revenge.
