Vietnam must seize economic moment: leader

Vietnam must take advantage of the economic upswing created by its recent accession to the World Trade Organization to maintain its pace as one of the world’s fastest growing economies, a top leader said Tuesday.

Admission to the WTO, along with the Asia Pacific Cooperation forum held last year in Hanoi, has led to greater opportunities for foreign investment and growth, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong said Tuesday at the opening of the country’s last legislative session before elections in May.

He said the lawmakers would review “the causes of success and shortcomings” to help the nation move forward. Last year, Vietnam posted 8.2 percent growth, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

During the two-week session, the assembly will hear reports from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Nguyen Minh Triet and also discuss several laws.
