Teacher Chang Foundation helps 26,000 smokers quit

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Teacher Chang Foundation Taiwan Smokers’ Helpline has served over 130,000 smokers since it was established five years ago, helping over 20 percent of those stay away from cigarettes for good, the foundation announced yesterday at an Asia-Pacific Quit-Line workshop in Taiwan.

Hosted by the Teacher Chang Foundation at the Chien-Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center, the workshop gathered over 60 professionals and representatives of non-profit organizations from 14 different countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

“In 2002, 48.2 percent of adult males and 5.8 percent of adult females in Taiwan were smokers. In just three years, those numbers decreased to 39.9 and 4.8 percent, respectively. This is solid progress, but there is still room for improvement,” said Chao Kun-yu, vice director general of the Bureau of Health Promotion, Department of Health.

Chao encouraged smokers with the slogan, “Trust me, you can quit!”

For those who are trying to quit smoking, call Taiwan Smokers’ Helpline for free counseling at 0800-636-363.
