NT$3 billion in bets for Wang as winning pitcher in playoffsThat alone has enabled bookmakers in Taiwan to chalk up NT$3 billion in wagers for a win by the New York Yankees in the first of their best-of-five American League playoff games with the Cleveland Indians today. The Taiwanese-born Wang is the starting pitcher for the East Division wild card Yankees. The odds are 20 percent in return for a winning margin of one run by the Yankees. If they win by more than two runs, a full repayment will be made. Eight out of every ten gamblers in Taiwan bet on Taiwan’s favorite son, a Tainan bookmaker said yesterday. “We are quite sure,” he added, “all these people will have their eyes glued to the TV screen.” Formosa TV and ESPN will air the Yankees-Indians game live starting at 6:30 a.m. (Taipei time). Two other games between the Yankees and the Indians will take place on Saturday (starting at 5 a.m.) and on Monday (starting at 6:30 a.m.) All three playoff games will be played at Cleveland, Ohio. | |||||||||||||
