Updated Thursday, September 27, 2007 0:00 am TWN, The China Post news staff Four grand justice nominees grilled over Taiwan’s statusCandidates Yeh Chun-jung, Li Chen-shan and Liu Hsing-yi told lawmakers that the ROC does exist under the present constitution. Another nominee, Hsu Chih-hsiung, said the ROC exists “internally,” but there is still room for discussion in the international community. They were being questioned by Kuomintang Legislator Sun Ta-chien during the legislative screening of their nominations by President Chen Shui-bian to the Council of Grand Justices. Hsu’s answer earned him a refusal from Sun to continue questioning him. Hsu was asked by the chairman of the session to return to his seat from the podium where the four candidates had each taken questions. Sun pressed the remaining three with the question of whether the country’s official title should be changed to the “Republic of Taiwan.” Yeh said changing the national title is not a pressing issue of constitutional reform, whose focus should be directed on improving the government structure and protecting human rights.
