Finance Ministry denies it promotes smoking

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Vice Minister of Finance Liu Teng-cheng reaffirmed yesterday that the ministry has no intention of promoting smoking in Taiwan.

Liu’s remarks came in response to an accusation by officials from the John Tung Foundation which claimed a day earlier that a press release recently posted by the ministry on its Web site aims at promoting cigarettes produced by the state-run Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corp. The press release, which describes cigarette brands and their features in great detail, was mistakenly placed on the Web site by ministry staff described as being in dereliction of duty.

Liu promised that the ministry will establish a mechanism to prevent press releases dedicated to the promotion of merchandise from being posted online.
