Taiwan shares gain on buying in financial sector

Taiwan shares rose Wednesday, boosted by foreign buying in the financial sector.

The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange climbed 237.15 points, or 2.7 percent, to close at 9,099.46 points on weak volume.

Thursday the index will likely move in a 9,100-9,200 range, said Stanley Chou of Mega International Investment.

Non-tech stocks led the surge Wednesday.

The food index was up 4.8 percent on rising prices for consumer staples. The paper products index gained 4 percent, boosted by steep third quarter price increases.
