Iranian officials confirmed Monday that a rescue helicopter crashed in an area of southeastern Iran

hard hit by last week's cyclone, but said there were no casualties, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The agency quoted Javad Kamali, deputy governor of Kerman province, as saying the crash occurred Sunday night with no casualties in Marez district, some 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) southeast of Tehran, the capital.

Last week, floods spawned by the remnants of Cyclone Gonu stranded hundreds of tiny villages in three provinces in southern Iran, killing 12, cutting off roads, power and communications and sending some residents into trees for safety.

The storm killed at least 49 in the neighboring country of Oman, with 27 missing.
