Taichung residents may face fines for walking, smoking

The Taichung City Government is mulling imposing fines on those who smoke and chew betel nuts while walking, a move that caused mixed responses from residents. The Taichung City Hall recently proposed that the city government prohibit people from smoking and chewing betel nuts while walking, so as to maintain a clean environment in the city.

In response, Taichung Mayor Jason Hu said it will be up to the residents to determine whether the above-mentioned behavior should be fined. There are now similar regulations in place in Japan and Europe to fine people for randomly spitting betel nut juice and littering cigarette butts. Some Taichung residents applauded for the move, but some said the proposed punishment runs counter to human rights.
