Chen calls for party solidarity

President Chen Shui-bian, apparently concerned about the keenly contested Democratic Progressive Party primaries, called for solidarity to win the election in 2008.

After casting his vote in a primary in Taipei, Chen cautioned all four presidential hopefuls not to forget to stand united to win the election in March next year.

“Don’t try to win the primaries and then lose the presidential election,” Chen warned all four presidential hopefuls.

Taiwan has to win in 2008, President Chen went on. “And the Democratic Progressive Party has to win in 2008,” he declared.

“Competitors today have to be your supporters tomorrow in the great election of 2008,” President Chen urged.

An estimated 255,000 DPP members voted in the primaries. The outcome accounted for 30 percent of the score needed to garner the nomination for president.

An in-house poll, scheduled for May 9-11, will supply the other 70 percent.

The DPP will announce the nomination at the end of this month.
