Updated Wednesday, May 2, 2007 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Actor Sun Yueh calls for public smoking banSun discovered his lung cancer tumor late last year after taking an X-ray as part of an activity in which he was promoting pneumonia prevention. The surgery to remove his lung tumor took place in February but Sun did not have to undergo chemotherapy, as the cancer was fortunately detected at an early stage. Sun said yesterday that if his life ended today he would have no regrets, as he has done everything he could do in his life. Immediately after his cancer surgery, Sun was in an advertisement calling for a ban on smoking in all indoor areas. Sun has been an outspoken figure against smoking for more than twenty years, appearing in numerous public benefit advertisements for the public health campaign. Sun said that for the sake of the next generation, those who have been exposed to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke and smokers who are harmed again by inhaling the exhaled smoke, legislators should pass the tobacco hazards prevention bill immediately. Sun appeared to be in good spirits despite coughing occasionally and speaking in a coarse voice during yesterday’s press conference. He said that God allowed him to discover his lung cancer early so that he could strive to complete his unfinished work. Sun said that his friends had advised him to rest three months after his surgery, but that he could only continue his work against smoking after having received so much help from his doctors. Taipei Veterans General Hospital doctor Teng Chao-fang said that exposure to second-hand smoke for thirty minutes can cause clogging of the arteries, damage to artery cells, and an increase in the risk of developing heart disease. Long-term exposure to second-hand smoke can even bring about severe chest problems, such as asthma and an increase in the risk of suffering heart attacks or pneumonia.
