Updated Wednesday, January 10, 2007 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Four million adult smokers in TaiwanAccording to a survey conducted by the DOH’s Bureau of Health Promotion, even though the number of male smokers last year has decreased by about four percent compared to the year before, the figure is still high at 39.6 percent — about four out of every ten males or over 3.5 million people. For women, the figure remains considerably lower at 4.12 percent, or over 410,000 people. Over half of the male smokers are between the ages of 31 and 45. Four out of every 12 female smokers are between 26 and 30 years old. About 30 percent of those polled said that they were exposed to second-hand smoke in the past week by either family members who smoke inside the house, or by co-workers who smoke while inside work facilities. About 18 percent of those surveyed said they are exposed to second-hand smoking at home every day, while 17 percent said they are exposed to second-hand smoking every day at work. Of the smokers surveyed, those who said they have thought of quitting this past year constituted 41 percent, less than previous years, according to the United Evening News.
