Updated Thursday, December 14, 2006 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Beijing announces charter flight plansLi issued the announcement at a routine press conference held in Beijing. He said that, based on an agreement reached on June 14 by private civil aviation institutions of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the first charter flight for the upcoming Chinese New Year festival will kick off on Feb. 4, 13 days before the Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 18, 2007. Li said airline firms of both sides of the Taiwan Strait will operate 48 flights each across the strait. Each side will have six airline firms operate the flights. The spokesman continued that those Taiwanese people who hold relevant legal and valid documents for traveling across the strait and their family members will be allowed to take charter flights during the Chinese New Year holidays. Beijing authorities haven’t ruled out the possibility for relevant units of both sides of the strait to have further talks on expanding the number of charter flights, increasing the flight routes, and enlarging the passenger base, according to Li. He said that in order to better meet the real demand for cross-strait charter flights, Beijing hopes civil aviation firms of both sides of the strait to conduct further negotiations based on the existing modes, concerning the expansion of the number of flights, flight routes and passenger base. Both sides can dispatch representatives of airline firms to each other’s side to make necessary preparations 10 days before the charter flights for the Lunar New Year festival kick off on Feb. 5, 2007.
