All of the 1,193 graduates from the Taipei Municipal Senior High School this year were accepted by the universities, including 83 percent going to national universities which charges lower tuition but require better grades. The school also sent 22 graduates to the Medical School of the National Taiwan University, the most coveted department for all high school graduates on the island. The Kaohsiung Municipal Senior High School will have 10 graduates attending the same medical school. The oldest freshman is 59-year-old Lu Yi-gang who will study at the Department of Philosophy at the Hua Nan University. Lu, a retiree, already earned a bachelor’s degree from the National Taiwan Normal University and a master’s degree from the National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung. After teaching at high schools, Lu started a business venture supplying concrete for the construction industry. He was elected a member of Guangzhi Township Assembly but failed to win the township chief election. Please see GRADUATE on page One of the youngest freshpersons is Tang Pei-hua, 16-year-old graduate from the Tainan Municipal Girls Senior High School. She plans to become a dentist after graduating from the National Yangming University in Taipei. One-armed Liu Yu-chun, a graduate of the Taipei Municipal Songshan Senior High School, will study at the Department of Information Management of the National Central University. With a deformed left arm, Liu uses his feet to play video game consoles like PS2 better than most classmates. Taiwan boasts one of the world’s highest ratio of university graduates and the highest density of universities. Politicians like to give political checks by promising voters to set up at least one university in every county on the island. President Chen Shui-bian and Premier Frank Hsieh recently jointly presided over an inauguration ceremony for the National Penghu University, the first university located in the offshore county of Penghu, just a few days ago. Since people in Taiwan favor universities to colleges, the government upgrades the status of the existing National Penghu College of Technology in Penghu to a university.
