Updated Friday, December 13, 2002 0:00 am TWN, BEIJING, Agencies U.S. admiral due in Beijing for military exchange“Military and government officials from departments concerned will meet (him) separately,” foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said. Besides Beijing, Fargo will also visit Chengdu, Nanjing, Ningbo and Shanghai, Liu said. “During his visit he will meet with reserve units from the army, as well as the air force and the navy,” the spokesman said, without naming names. It was unclear if Fargo would meet with China’s highest ranking military officer Cao Guangchun, who was appointed last month as a vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission. In Nanjing, Fargo will be visiting the headquarters of one of China’s most important regional military districts which defends China’s eastern seaboard. The district is also responsible for any possible mainland military preparations on retaking Taiwan and is the command center that has overseen China’s robust deployment of missiles facing Taiwan. Ningbo is one of the deepest sea ports in the region. For its part, Chengdu is the seat of the Chengdu military district which oversees defense operations of the strategic Tibet Plateau. While in India earlier this week, Fargo visited the disputed line of control in the Kashmir region which besides bordering Pakistan and India also border’s China’s Tibet. U.S. officials in Beijing said that the admiral may possibly give a speech on U.S.-China relations while in Shanghai, but said his schedule was still being discussed by both sides. Fargo’s visit comes after Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met with Chinese leaders and officials Wednesday and Thursday to discuss U.S. ambitions concerning Iraq. Fargo’s visit also follows the resumption of military-to military relations between China and the United States that began in Washington earlier this week with the visit of the deputy chief of staff of China’s military Xiong Guangkai.
