Made of Honor 新郎不是我

Do you, reader, take director Paul Weiland’s romantic comedy at first glance to be a half-hearted rehash of previously well-marketed emotional mush, worthy of viewer consideration only for lack of better box office offerings?

If your answer is “I do,” then you might unexpectedly find Weiland wearing a cryptic smirk; reminiscent of the number straddling our equally charismatic anti-hero on the movie’s poster.

Pushing into uncharted territory, “Made of Honor” takes a risky twist on lecherous playboy Tom (Patrick Dempsey) confronts his utter lack of self-respect, as he fumbles around after “true love” in the bridal chamber of mister right’s wedding party.

Some of us don’t mind that our hero is one of New York’s most notorious womanizers; others consider the lusty businessman incapable of turning a new leaf. But no matter where our hopes and suspicions fall in this comic log toss over a man’s only shot at true love, conclusions aren’t likely to land too far from the tree stump.

Tom is the typecast diehard rompaholic, counting off more ticks on his “women to do” checklist than Charles Feck had popping out of his skin in Philip K. Dick’s celebrated black comedy “A Scanner Darkly.”

The film opens with Tom hitting a standard college booze-fest darning a Bill Clinton facemask, as he prowls the girls’ dorms for his latest lay “Monica.”

He is sorely disappointed after mistakenly jumping into bed with the stone-cold leading lady Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), who smacks with a rare dose of honesty and chastity. Spellbound, the rampant womanizer realizes he’s met his only true chance at friendship with this un-seducible member of the opposite sex.

Flashing forward into their thirties, the two best friends-forever are supporting each other through times of uncertainty.

Tom seems to suffer in style. Just as his interest in maintaining this backbreaking quota of meaningless sexual encounters wanes, he watches his father taking his vows with seventh wife... or was it the eighth?

Hannah on the other hand, while all good humor and warmth, has grown weary of a sexually and romantically stifled lifestyle.
