Art for canines: 'Dogumenta' opens in New York

NEW YORK — New York is a paradise for pets, with doggy hairdressers, gyms and hotels. Now art lovers can take their pooches to "Dogumenta (I) NYC," billed as "America's first art show for dogs."

Ten visual artists have created art specifically for our four-legged friends in an outdoor gallery accessible to dogs and their human caregivers, organizers said.

Visiting dogs seem especially interested in exhibits that are interactive: that is, those that squeak or are edible.

They are presented at a dog-friendly height, and there is plenty of room in the gallery designed with canine needs in mind.

The artworks owe a lot to doggy tastes, and most are constructed from materials dogs know and love, like artist Tibi Tibi Neuspiel's collage made in part out of doggy toys.

Others exhibits are reminiscent of dog houses, baskets and doggy pools.

Visiting labradoodle Woodley seems to enjoy a pool-based piece by Eleanna Anagnos called "Penumbra Oasis." The dog jumps right into the pool and laps up the somewhat dirty water.

The exhibition also is a good place for dogs to meet other dogs, says Carole Hughes, visiting with her dog Satchmo.

"Dogumenta" runs until early September.
