SION, Switzerland -- Swiss adventurer Xavier Rosset took off on Sunday for a trip around the world in a motorized ultra-light aircraft.

The 41-year-old former professional snowboarder plans to cover more than 80,000 kilometers, visiting at least 50 countries during the trip.

The goal of the journey is to meet new people, experience new cultures, and explore the world, Rosset told Swiss news agency sda.

His motorized hang glider weighs 240 kilograms, has a wing-span of 9.85 meters and can reach a maximum speed of 157 kilometers per hour.

The trip, composed of three stages, is planned to take until the fall of 2019.
