HTC finds biker who helped CEO at Mobile World Congress in Spain

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwanese phone vendor HTC Corp. (宏達電) has found the motorcyclist who helped its chief executive officer (CEO to get to a critical meeting at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show, held in Barcelona, Spain in late February after he was caught in a traffic jam.

Obdulio Herrera gave Peter Chou (周永明) a lift to the trade show venue, HTC said in a blog post Wednesday. He refused payment for his action, the Taoyuan-based company said.

The 53-year-old was found thanks to the press and social networks following a request for help from HTC on its blog.

To properly thank Herrera for his gesture, Chou has invited him to the company's most important event of the year, which will take place March 25 in London — the launch of its new flagship handset.

HTC released a teaser video Feb. 26, hinting that its next flagship smartphone might have a name similar to the HTC One but lengthier — The All New HTC One.

The new handset, codenamed M8 within the company, reportedly will feature the same metal casing design as its predecessor, a 5-inch full-HD display, an improved Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, the new Sense 6.0 user interface and a twin camera on the back.

HTC is banking on the new phone to help reverse a recent slump. The struggling phone vendor posted its first quarterly loss as a publicly listed company in the third quarter of 2013 and recorded its second straight quarterly operating loss in the October-December period.
