Teenager wins 55-km Wulin uphill challenge

YILAN, Taiwan -- A 19-year-old Yilan native stood victorious over 4,167 competitors yesterday in a 55-kilometer bike race, spanning from a high school in Nantou County to Wuling — the highest point on Taiwan’s road system.

Lin Huan-tser, who began cycling a year ago, raced up the winding mountain road in two hours, 56 minutes and seven seconds.

He told reporters this was his first time to take up the Wuling challenge, one of the events comprising Taiwan’s “2008 Never Stop” cycling series.

Each cyclist, completing the journey within seven hours, as required by the organizers, received a “hero’s certificate.”

Among them were 39 competitors from the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong.

The bicycle challenge, sponsored by the Nantou County government and the Bicycle Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan), started at 5:30 a.m., with the 4,167 competitors setting off in staggered starts from Puli Industrial Vocational Senior High School over 50 minutes.

The event formally ended at 1:30 p.m. in Wuling, a ridge of Hehuan Mountain, located on the New Cross-Island Highway 3,275 meters above sea level — the highest elevation of any road in Taiwan.
