'Minimalist' handbags are what's in
By Ira Schaible, dpaBerlin--A boom in sales of handbags is buoying Europe's fashion houses: among the designs decorating the most fashionable bags are kaleidoscope, animal, floral and graphic patterns.

There's also a parallel trend towards design-free accessories which have a distinctly minimalist and monochrome feel. Black and white combinations are in fashion, along with colors that run in to each other. Lots of next season's bags have a silver-metallic look. “Last summer's festival of color has quieted down a lot,” says fashion consultant Martin Wuttke. “However, a certain element of summer freshness has remained.” Some of next season's bags show a trend towards sweet candy colors and soft pastels.
Many bags also have natural, earthy colors as well as grey and black shades. Some of the detailing is being provided in orange, green, violet, mint, blue and soft pink. Along with brash patterns there's also a style of classy-looking bags. Materials include light leather, nylon and neoprene.
Wuttke says solid-looking shapes made from soft leather are very popular. Many of next season's handbags have long straps and graphic-design patterns. Small-format camera bags and roll-able, narrow bicycle-courier-type rucksacks will also be a trend next year.
