Get on the bus of fashion

From now to Saturday, board the "fashion bus" in Taipei's Xinyi District. Up to 25 passers-by at a time can climb into the parked vehicle and watch films as they please, no admission charged.

The bus is showing 11 short films that are mostly from global fashion-houses like Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton.

"To some extent, yes, the films are about product, but they're much more. Primarily they're about the different forms of creativity and their confrontation," said Hong Kong director and producer Stanley Kwan (關錦鵬) at the 2012 Vogue Fashion Mini Film Festival premiere screening last week.

In "The Little Black Jacket" by Chanel, one of the festival's Made-in-Taiwan titles, Mandopop singer Amber Kuo (郭采潔) plays a mousy assistant who catches a break and finally gets to shine under studio lights.

Also locally produced, 16-minute "Chanel ULTRA" is a collection of black-and-white interviews with Taiwan luminaries. In one chapter, filmmaker Yang Li-chou (楊力洲) talks about his work documenting the fabled "grandmother cheerleaders" of Kaohsiung. In another, Go prodigy Hsieh Yi-min (謝依旻) is candid about the infuriating realities of the game.

Other fashion shorts, like Roman Polanski's "A Therapy" by Prada, were made overseas for the event.

"Light or heavy, long or short — it's all exciting content. We hope to give Taiwan a viewing experience that's genuinely enjoyable," said festival curator Chen Pao-hsu (陳寶旭).

'Fashion's Night Out'

The mini-film festival is one among many events for Vogue's "Fashion's Night Out," which comes to Greater Taipei this weekend and to Kaohsiung the next.

Initiated by Vogue's Anna Wintour in 2009, "Fashion's Night Out" is a shopping bash held annually across the globe, aimed at urging the public to show off, consume and just plain enjoy fashion even in drab times.

"Fashion's Night Out" opens in Taipei's Xinyi District tomorrow. The night will open with a red carpet event at the district's Vieshow Cinema and will continue with celebrity-accompanied shopping sprees, DJ entertainment and an after-party at the Dazzling Champagne Dining Bar.

One week later, it's the Kaohsiung edition of "Fashion's Night Out." The southern city, a first-time participant, is to see a boat party at Fisherman's Wharf (漁人碼頭), a professional runway show in MRT carriages and steep discounts at the Dream Mall, SOGO and other regional department stores. ■
