Central, south Taiwan air quality poor: EPA

The poor air quality was caused by a lack of wind to disperse atmospheric pollutants, the EPA said.

Three monitoring stations in the western part of the county in Lunbei, Mailiao and Taixi were still showing hazardous PM2.5 levels at noon, EPA data showed.

PM2.5 levels in central Taiwan also reached hazardous levels in Changhua County and Chiayi County in the morning, though as of noon, the concentration of PM2.5 in those areas had fallen below 50 micrograms/cubic meter, which is the EPA's threshold for PM2.5 levels being hazardous.

The EPA reminded the public to wear a mask when going outdoors in those areas and suggested that those who suffer from heart, respiratory or cardiovascular disease and the elderly avoid physical activity outdoors.
