Goodall visits rehabilitated river in Southern Taiwan

TAIPEI -- British conservationist Jane Goodall praised yesterday the improved quality of a river in Southern Taiwan that was once heavily polluted but was later rehabilitated through the initiative of local residents.

Goodall observed the improvement in the 61-kilometer Erjen River, which runs through Kaohsiung to Tainan, and she was pleased to see that a diverse ecology had reappeared on the river's banks.

Su Sui-lung, secretary-general of the Jiading Samfar Association, a group helping fishermen protect the natural environment, introduced to Goodall the mudskippers, fiddler crabs, sea birds and egrets existing along the river.

A number of factors have helped bring back the area's natural diversity, Su said, with the catalyst being NT$1 billion (US$34.4 million) in funding from the government to clean up the waste on the river's banks.
