TAIPEI--Most office workers in Taiwan eat out regularly, spending an average NT$1,000 (US$33.21) more per month on food than those who prepare their own meals, according to an online survey released yesterday.
The poll by Taipei Medical University found that around 78 percent of office workers usually buy their meals, spending NT$5,517 per month on average, compared with NT$4,461 per month spent by those who bring food from home.
Meanwhile, 93 percent of those who eat out regularly are aware that the use of disposable containers puts a strain on the environment, but more than 60 percent of them said they cannot be bothered to bring their own containers to buy meals, according to the poll.
Only 6 percent of the office workers who buy meals use their own food containers, while 85 percent eat from the paper boxes provided by restaurants, the poll found.
In addition, more than 50 percent of the respondents said they usually do not finish their meals, often leaving rice and vegetables on their plates.
