Iraq: Police commandos will protect historic sitesThe move comes as Iraqi forces are laying out plans for taking over their own security under a recently approved pact with the United States that sets a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by the end of 2011. Lt. Gen. Hussein al-Awadi, the commander of Iraq’s National Police force, said a new agency will be created to provide security for archaeological sites, which faced widespread looting in the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and have not entirely recovered.
