DOS: No plans to publish Mideast security report

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. State Department said Tuesday it was unaware of any plans to publish a report by its Middle East security envoy General James Jones, as an analyst suggested it might be a political hot potato.

“My understanding is that there are no plans to publish a report based on the general’s work,” the department’s deputy spokesman Robert Wood told AFP when asked for comment.

In September last year, a panel headed by Jones published a report on Iraq.U.S.

Wood did not say why there would be no published report on the Palestinians but the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported in August that Jones was preparing “an extremely critical report of Israel’s policies” in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It added that there was a debate in President George W. Bush’s administration about whether to publish the full report.
