Greece picks Norwegian contractor to conduct seismic surveys for oil, gas

ATHENS--Greece has picked a Norwegian contractor to carry out seismic surveys in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete in search for oil and gas, the environment ministry said on Wednesday.

Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) was picked to probe for hydrocarbon caches in a large area between 100 and 400 kilometers (62-248 miles) from the coast of western Greece and Crete, the ministry said.

The earmarked area covers 225,000 square kilometers.
