Wartime victims' remains recovered in Bosnia lake

SARAJEVO -- The remains of some 250 people believed to be Muslims who disappeared during Bosnia's 1992-1995 war have been recovered from a lake in eastern Bosnia, an official said Wednesday.

“So far we have found 250 skeletons, mostly incomplete,” Amor Masovic, an official of Bosnia's Institute for Missing People, told AFP.

Experts believe that the remains belong to Muslims killed at the start of the war by Bosnian Serb forces carrying out ethnic cleansing near Bosnia's eastern town of Visegrad.

“We are still searching for 824 people reported missing in the Visegrad region and believe that half of them have been thrown into the Perucac lake,” Masovic added.

The search of the Perucac lake, a reservoir on the Drina river which marks the border between Serbia and Bosnia.
