France’s Sarkozy defends Dalai Lama meeting

PARIS -- Facing an angry protest from China, President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday defended his decision to meet the Dalai Lama, saying it was his duty as French head of state to meet with a Nobel peace laureate.

Chinese state media warned that Sarkozy’s meeting Saturday with the Tibetan spiritual leader could have a negative impact on trade but no measures were announced.

“It is the duty of the French president to meet with all Nobel peace prize winners, regardless of their origins, their beliefs or the cause that they defend,” said Sarkozy.

“France would not be true to its history if it did not provide a place to those who have been awarded this remarkable distinction that is the Nobel peace prize,” he added.
