Pope Benedict tells banks to help the poor

VATICAN CITY -- Banks should turn their attention to helping the poor in the midst of the global financial crisis, and to supporting the real economy, Pope Benedict XVI said Wednesday. The leader of the worldwide Roman Catholic church made the remark when he met a delegation of employees of an Italian banking co-operative during his weekly audience at the Vatican.

“Your presence gives me the opportunity to cast a light — especially in these difficult times for many families — on one of the primary goals of banking and credit institutions,” he said. “That is, solidarity with the weakest and support for productive activity.”
