Domestic workers rights bill affecting 200,000 vetoed by Calif. chief executive

The Democratic governor announced Sunday that he rejected AB889, dubbed the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, saying the bill “raises a number of unanswered questions.”

It is unclear how the law would have been enforced and whether it would have extended to part-time workers such as baby sitters.

Labor advocates passed similar legislation in New York and are targeting Massachusetts and Illinois. They say the protections are needed to prevent the abuse of primarily female, immigrant workers.

The California Chamber of Commerce said the legislation by Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco would hurt working families by imposing impractical regulations.
