MOMBASA, Kenya -- At least 3 people were killed and several others wounded in a hand grenade attack on a bar in the Kenyan tourist hub of Mombasa as clients were watching the Euro 2012 championship Sunday, police said.
Three of the wounded are in a critical condition, the head of the coastal province's police, Aggrey Adoli, said.
At the time of the attack on the Jericho bar in the densely populated Mishomoroni district football fans were following the Euro 2012 quarter-final match in Kiev between England and Italy.
"The attack occurred at about 10:00 p.m. One person has died and we have several others injured," a police officer said.
The attack came a day after the U.S. Embassy in Kenya warned of the threat of an imminent attack in Mombasa, as Kenyan police arrested two Iranians over suspected links to a terror network planning bombings in Mombasa and in the capital Nairobi.
"This is to alert all U.S. citizens in Kenya, or planning to travel to Kenya in the near future, that the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has received information of an imminent threat of a terrorist attack in Mombasa," a statement said.
"All U.S. government travel to Mombasa is suspended until July 1."
But the head of the Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet, Francis Kimemia, told journalists in Mombasa a few hours before the attack: "It is a reckless advisory and it was totally uncalled for. It is aimed at sabotaging the country's economy".
"We have written to them to reverse the decision," he said, adding "The government has the capacity to contain the terror threats in our country."
France's embassy in Nairobi also warned its citizens to be "extremely vigilant" in Mombasa and the surrounding area.
Police in Nairobi have also seized bomb ingredients from two young men who were stopped during a routine patrol, according to a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday.
