Updated Friday, September 3, 2010 10:21 pm TWN, AFP Brazil's murder rate soars 32% over 15 years: studyHealth ministry records show the homicide rate in 2007 was 25.4 per 100,000 inhabitants — nearly a third more than the 19.2 rate recorded in 1992, the study from the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute said. Broken down, men were 10 times more likely to meet with a violent death than women. The institute noted, however, that from 2003 the murder rate trend was going lower. Nevertheless, the impact of the murders was enough that it weighed down overall life expectancy in the country, especially for young men. The study also noted the high social and economic cost of the violence, especially the psychological impact on families and spending on hospitals. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
