Despite drug violence, Mexican state still expects Easter tourists

MORELIA -- Authorities in the Mexican state of Michoacan said Tuesday they expect some 500,000 tourists to visit over the Easter holidays next month, despite a surge in drug-related violence.

Michoacan is home to the notorious and violent Familia Michoacana drug cartel, but is also popular with tourists who come for a butterfly migration and to see the colonial architecture of Morelia, the state capital.

Genovevo Figueroa, the state's tourism secretary, told AFP he expected revenue of close to 757 million pesos (US$60.5 million), but declined to estimate how many foreign visitors the state could attract.

The United States and Canada have upgraded travel warnings to Mexico after hitmen killed an American employee of the U.S. consulate, her husband and another consulate-linked victim during weekend attacks in broad daylight.

Mexico is the most popular tourist destination in Latin America and was expected to attract nearly 23 million visitors in 2010, according to Ministry of Tourism projections released last December.
