Mexican drug gang leader gets 21 years in U.S. jail

WASHINGTON -- The leader of a Mexican drug trafficking ring, Aaron Quintero-Soto, was sentenced Monday to 21 years in prison in the United States, the Justice Department announced.

Quintero-Soto, a 41-year-old native of Mexico's Sinaloa state, pleaded guilty in June of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine in the United States, a Department statement said.

His organization brought drugs into the United States from Mexico through the US city of Phoenix, Arizona, from which it was distributed around the United States.

Four other members of the same group were sentenced to between one and eight years in jail, the statement added.

“This investigation and prosecution puts a significant DTO (drug trafficking operation) out of business and its leaders in federal prison,” said US Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis Burke.

“This organization was responsible for importing significant amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine, and crack into the United States with devastating effect on communities,” he added.
