Jordan’s king in Chile for first Latin America tour

SANTIAGO -- King Abdullah II arrived in Chile Sunday for the start of the Jordanian monarch’s first-ever Latin American tour, which aims to broaden Amman’s trade ties with the region.

The king, 46, accompanied by his Palestinian-born wife Queen Rania and a delegation of business leaders, was to be received by Chile’s leader Michelle Bachelet at the La Moneda presidential palace. The two leaders were expected to sign various agreements promoting tourism and economic cooperation during his visit in Chile, which ends Wednesday.

The king also was to be feted late Sunday at a state dinner in his honor in Santiago. On Tuesday he was to give a speech in Chile about the Islamic world, and also was to take part here in a binational business roundtable gathering. Jordanian officials said Abdullah’s itinerary will take him to Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras and Cuba.
