New York state agencies recognize gay marriages

NEW YORK -- New York state has instructed all state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages conducted out of state or abroad and to give the same benefits to gay married couples as to other married couples.

The directive was welcomed by the New York Civil Liberties Union, which posted a copy of it on its Web site Wednesday and said it was “a milestone in the fight for fairness.”

In the memo dated May 14, Gov. David Paterson’s legal counsel, David Nocenti, said state agencies that do not recognize gay marriages could be subject to liability and he instructed them to adjust their policies accordingly.
