China approves USS Nimitz visit to Hong KongReuters BEIJING -- China said on Tuesday it will allow a U.S. aircraft carrier to visit Hong Kong this month, the first since the USS Kitty Hawk was denied approval to make a port call over Thanksgiving in November. “China has approved the application of the USS Nimitz battle group to visit Hong Kong at the beginning of this month,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a news conference. China’s rejection of the Kitty Hawk sparked a diplomatic tiff and left the ship’s thousands to spend the American holiday of Thanksgiving at sea.
April 2, 2008, 12:00 am TWN Beijing, which claimed it had all been a misunderstanding, allowed the USS Blue Ridge to enter Hong Kong waters in January in what was seen as a restoration of ties.
