[Updated] The Burkina Faso terror attack is over, with two gunmen killed

OUAGADOUGOU — Security forces in Burkina Faso took control of a neighborhood in the capital Ouagadougou on Monday after 18 people were killed in an attack on a restaurant, Radio France Internationale (RFI) quoted Information Minister Remi Dandjinou as saying.

Two of the four attackers were killed after the last shots from the exchange of fire were heard in the early morning hours, the minister told RFI.

Eighteen people were killed and at least 20 injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on a hotel and a restaurant in Ouagadougou late Sunday, according to the report.

Dandjinou said he could not exclude a terrorist attack.

The neighborhood around the hotel and restaurant remained cordoned off on Monday morning, as security forces were searching for the two other assailants.

Shots had been heard until the early morning hours from Hotel Bravia and a Turkish restaurant named Istanbul, located on Avenue Kwame N'krumah, witnesses told dpa.

The victims were believed to be of several nationalities.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that one Turkish citizen was killed and another injured, adding that it strongly condemns the incident.

The French government meanwhile advised its citizens to avoid the center of Ouagadougou, due to a "terrorist attack."

"The operation of the Burkinabe security forces is still ongoing," the statement read.

In January last year, about 30 people were killed when Islamist extremists attacked a cafeteria located on the same street in the Burkinabe capital, according to RFI.
