Three hostages freed from Mali arrive in Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso -- The three Europeans who were freed after being held for the past 10 months by a jihadist group in north Mali landed Thursday in Burkina Faso, a mediator involved in the negotiations said.

Spaniards Enric Gonyalons and Ainhoa Fernandez del Rincon and Italian Rossella Urru touched down in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, after a stop off in Gorom Gorom, some 300 kilometers north of the capital, said the official who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The mediator said they are "in good spirits and mostly in good health, but one of the hostages suffered a bullet in his leg," he said. He added that the hostages were given new clothes in Gorom Gorom in order to prepare them for their return. They will likely fly back to their home countries from Ouagadougou.

A plane had been sent to Africa to get the freed hostages, said a Spanish ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with ministry rules.
