Mandela takes legal action against London gallery

JOHANNESBURG -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela is taking legal action against an art gallery in London for selling sketches it says are his, Mandela’s lawyers said on Friday. The anti-apartheid icon has told his law firm Chuene Incorporated to make clear publicly he has no connection with the artworks under display at the Belgravia Gallery in London, the law firm said in a statement.

“This is a long-standing legal issue which we have been engaged in,” said Achmat Dangor, chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Many of the sketches are scenes from Robben Island, where he spent most of his time in prison during apartheid.
