Khartoum under curfew as Darfur rebels advance

KHARTOUM -- Sudanese soldiers clashed with Darfur rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in the north of the capital Khartoum on Saturday where a curfew has now been imposed.

“Army forces are currently facing attack by rebels loyal to (JEM leader) Khalil Ibrahim in the north of Omdurman,” the capital’s twin city, the army said in a statement read on state television.

The JEM Web site said that its fighters had taken control of Wadi Saidna air force base about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Khartoum, although this was impossible to verify. Witnesses said that heavy fighting had been taking place for at least two hours in Omdurman.
