China denies weapons-deal link to Kenyan violence

NAIROBI -- China on Friday denied it supplied weapons to Kenya for political reasons before the controversial Dec. 27 elections which unleashed widespread unrest, state media reported. In a meeting with civil groups in Nairobi, China’s ambassador to Kenya, Zhang Ming, said the two nations signed a weapons deal four months before the presidential election which had nothing to do with the violence.

“Not even one bullet was supplied to the Kenyan government through the Mombasa port to enable it win the political instability,” Zhang was quoted as saying by the state-run Kenya News Agency. Civil groups had claimed China offered the weapons to support the government ahead of the polls, which turned violent after opposition leader Raila Odinga accused President Mwai Kibaki of rigging the result.
