Men to the right, women to the left: Europe's last segregated beach

The male-female divide is dropped only once a year, for a summer party featuring drinking and dancing, captured also in a documentary celebrating the Pedocin that debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and was a runaway success at the local cinema.

"El Pedocin is magical, I don't know any other place like it in Europe, or even the world," Greek film-maker Thanos Anastopoulos, who worked on "L'Ultima Spiaggia" [The Last Resort] with Trieste-born Davide Del Degan, told dpa.

Compared to other gender-segregated beaches in the Middle East and elsewhere, Anastopoulos noted, the men and women of Trieste choose themselves to be kept apart by going to El Pedocin, rather than to any other ordinary beach.

And no one wants to change the club's most distinguishing feature.

"If we were to tear down the wall, the Pedocin would no longer be the Pedocin," Giorgio Rossi, the city council alderman who oversees the establishment, told dpa. "This is a Trieste icon, why should we lose what makes it exceptional?"
